Job Summary:

Senior Software Architect

As an experienced software architect, you will play an important part in helping the company continue its evolution and growth as a major technology company. You will be part of a team that is responsible for setting and communicating technical strategy and architectural guidelines, taking into account the context of the surrounding regulatory, industry, and technology environment while taking into account the constraints of our current technical architecture, talent, and financial resources. Fundamentally, you will help the company achieve its business goals by striking a good balance between:

  • standardization for efficiency vs. freedom to innovate and evolve
  • relying on "tried and true" technology and practices vs. embracing cutting-edge developments
  • optimizing for time-to-market vs. ensuring long-term technical health (i.e. smart management of technical debt)

However, in a company as large and complex as Comcast Cable, with hundreds of teams using Agile methodologies, technical decision making is necessarily distributed. Therefore, you will need to play the part of a "free range architect," establishing relationships with the working teams, helping them achieve their goals, evangelizing current guidelines, and collecting on-the-ground information to inform the guidelines' evolution. Success will rely heavily on interpersonal skills to gain trust and influence with the wider company community of architects, engineers, and management.

We are passionate about attracting a diverse set of interested people for this position, so please err on the side of applying.

  • Works with the Chief Software Architect and other members of the architecture team to help develop and maintain the software strategy for the company
  • Keep up with evolving strategic business plans
  • Participate in an Architecture Guild that helps define, evangelize, and evolve the set of "reasonable defaults" made available to technical teams
  • Cultivate relationships with technical management
  • Establish and maintain credibility with your fellow practicing technologists
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of our technologies and architectures
  • Gain support for enterprise-level software architecture and infrastructure initiatives
  • Stay abreast of new technical developments within the industry
  • Evangelize Comcast's identity as a technology company; promote the company's employment brand in the broader industry (e.g. via speaking at conferences, participating in open source initiatives, standards bodies, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

We anticipate that individuals with a wide variety of skills and experiences can be successful in this role. It is not necessary to bring all of these traits; if you can bring several of them, we would encourage you to apply.

  • 7 years of experience in the software industry
  • Leadership success in medium-to-large companies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills: emotional intelligence, empathy, and the ability to forge strong relationships
  • Ability to engage effectively with executive partners
  • Familiarity with budgeting and financial concepts
  • Comfort with hands-on technology practice (coding, testing, operations)
  • Expertise with several of:
